The ISS (International Science School) is a free, biennial science school that celebrates and honors excellence in young people displaying interest and aptitude for science, and aims to encourage these students to pursue careers in science and related areas.
Each ISS hosts 140 students selected by competitive process to attend the ISS. Scholars come from all over Australia, China (all 5 selected from High School of Peking University), Japan, Singapore, Thailand, the UK, USA, and New Zealand. For two weeks ISS scholars live on campus and participate in a range of activities including lectures by renowned scientists and leading researchers, hands-on scientific workshops, laboratory tours …not to mention a swag of social events like the Sydney Harbor Cruise and ISS talent quest!
The ISS was established in 1962 and is run by the Science Foundation for Physics within the University of Sydney. All in-country expenses, valued at approximately $ 3,500, are met by the Foundation.
Each ISS has a different theme and the scientists chosen to lecture are specialists in the relative fields. The theme for 2017 is Future Power, focusing on topics such as sustainable energy technologies, fission and fusion, battery technology and smart grids.
